’Suharto to academics: keep politics off campus’
NZPA-Reuter Jakarta President Suharto of Indonesia has asked the heads of Indonesia’s universities not to allow their camnuses to be used for political activities against the Government, informed sources have said. The sources said that the President made his appeal when he met rectors of some 230 universities, academies, and other higher learning institutes. The rectors yesterday began a three-day meeting
to discuss student unrest which has surfaced in the period leading up to President Suharto’s reelection next month.
The Education Minister (Lieutenant-General Syarif Tbayeb) said the rectors’ meeting was expected to provide guidelines for settling differences between students and rectors. # Last week, troops occupied the campus of the Institute of Technology in the West Java capital of Bandung after breaking up an anti-Government student meeting. on the bi-mohthly student magazine, “Salemba,” for carrying reports that could disturb the security situation in the Indonesian capital. About 30,000 copies of the magazine were seized from its printing works yesterday, a command spokesman said. Popular among students in Jakarta, “Salemba” is published by students at the influential University of Indonesia.
