A schematic plan taken from the “Film and New Zealand” display at the Canterbury Public Library, showing a history of central Christchurch theatres from 1896 to 1976. Although the Theatre Royal and the Opera House are shown ahead of the Colosseum, the latter was the first building specifically
used for showing films. The Civic stopped showing films on June 8, 1939, and the third Theatre Royal stopped showing films weekly in 1950, and on week-ends in 1956. Since 1976, the State has been closed, and the Savoy divided into twin cinemas.
