Parachute rescue teams join hunt

NZPA-Reuter Honolulu Rescuers trained to parachute into dangerous waters are seeking survivors of the 69 crew and passengers of the Indian grain freighter Chandragupta, abandoned in the North Pacific. The 69 included four women and two children. Coast Guard headquarters in Honolulu said nine aircraft, including two with parachute rescue teams, had joined the search. Four ships were also participating. The ship was abandoned in freezing winds and high seas.

A Coast Guard cutter, the Mellon, went yesterday to investigate a partiallysubmerged lifeboat and a 20man life-raft which had been spotted from the air. It found no sign of survivors, but sighted jackets and debris.

The Chandragupta, a 21,635-tonne bulk carrier, was loaded with 34,000 tonnes of wheat when it left Portland, Oregon, on December 25, bound for Iran via Sri Lanka.

It ran into a violent storm 1,000 nautical miles northwest of Hawaii and sent a distress call last Thursday.
