Universities lose

NZPA Melbourne A combined southern universities side thrashed the visiting New Zealand University side by 10 wickets in a three-day match completed at the Monash University ground yesterday. The New Zealand side, which won the toss and elected to bat, could manage only 152 in its first innings. The combined universities bowlers, John Hearne (5/29) and Chris Harms (4/33), ripped through the New Zealanders who, apart from Greg Cook with 50 and Phil Haydon with 28, offered little resistance. The combined universities batsmen replied with a first innings total of 305, mainly through the efforts of Peter Davies with 100 and Harms, who completed a fine allround performance by scoring 79. New Zealand fared little better in its second innings of 194 but had worthwhile contributions from Corran Amadi, who top-scored with 63, and Haydon with 48. This left the combined side only 42 runs to make in its second innings, which it did easily without loss.
