Four possibles shot in Ballinger Belt
I PA Wellington ' Three New Zealanders and an Australian lead the Balli- ' nger Belt field after scoring ! possibles in each of the two (opening matches of the 1978 ; series on the 1 rentham rifle iranges yesterday. ; On 100 points were the) Upper Hutt policeman, Brian; Whiteman, the Australian Mark Buchanan, an Auckland housewife, Margaret McCarthy, and a former Wellingtonian, Frank Godfrey, now shooting for Tauranga.
The quartet were the only shooters out of more than 400 contestants to emerge unscathed from the two 300 yards matches.
The weather was brilliantly fine, but the wind conditions were difficult to handie. The adverse winds were particularly tricky, in the morning, when the first stage of the aggregate was held over 800 yards and 900 (yards.
> The first competitors to I shoot at 800 had it easy — there was only the gentlest of breezes. But by the time the 900 yards match began gusting winds prevailed, which meant poor performances for many. Gina Black, the diminutive Australian who humbled her male counterparts in the Wellington championships, could not match the brilliant performance of Monday and after a 50 at 800 yards she tumbled to a 37 at 900. The best in the torrid conditions was Petone's Bob Grimwood. He nandled the winds in masterlv fashion, dropping only one point. The second best score over the long ranges went to
