Bayi slow
NZPA staff correspondent Washington The Tanzanian, Filbert Bayi, the world 1500 metres record-holder, disappointed in his first appearance on the 1977 American indoors track and field circuit. Running in the Muhammad Ali invitational track meeting at Long Beach, California, Bayi finished a distant fourth in the 1500 metres race. The race was won by Wilson Waigwa, a Kenyan studying at a Texas university. Waigwa
was clocked at 3min 38.65, more than one second inside Tony Waldrop’s American record of 3:39.8, set in San Diego four years ago. Waigwa’s time ranked as the second fastest ever run indoors, bettered only by the West German, Harald Norpoth’s, 3:37.8, a s e v e n-year-old mark. Second place went to the American, Paul Cummings, also inside the old record at 3:39.4. Another American, Dick Buerkle, was third in 3:40, with Bayi trailing at 3:41.9.
