Wee Win appeals at Hutt Park tonight
Special correspondent WeUington Sole Command beat Wee Win in last year’s New Zealand Cup, but the Christchurch pacer could get his revenge tonight when the Pacific Handicap conies up for decision at the Hutt Park Raceway. Wee Win was third in the New Zealand Cup and he proved that (was no fluke by running on late .for fourth in the New Zealand Free-for-all. Wee Win, which was one of the outsiders in the cup, has continued to race well and he looks to be ideally suited by the conditions of tonight’s Pacific Handicap. The race is run over 2000 metres and is, of course, the warm-up for Saturday’s Wellington Cup. Wee Win’s third In the cup proved he was a stayer, but he can also sprint. Two starts back lie was second to Nimble Yankee in the Miracle Mile and then won the open mile on Canterbury Park’s final night in Imin 58.9 sec. His ability tends to be underrated but tonight he looks a fine chance. He has drawn three on the front and will be driven by the astute Templeton reinsman, Wes Butt. The Pacific Handicap has drawn a field of 11 and tonight’s contestants, along with Belmer’s Image and Regal Light, look likely, at present, to give the Wellington Club a top-class field for its feature race on Saturday. Sole Command is something of a Hutt Park specialist. He is six now, but a season hardly goes by without him winning on the course. Last term alone he won twice on the course, in September and then in March. Last time out he was fifth over a mile at Cambridge but a better guide to his chances would have been his unlucky third at Alexandra Park at the end of last year. Sole Command and Wee Win were split in the New Zealand Cup by Greg Robinson. Forced to miss the Miracle Mile through injury, the four-year-old has made a fine recovery and though beaten at Cambridge last week, he should be all the better for his race there. His seconds in both the cup then the N.Z. Free-for-all were fine efforts indeed.
A pacer which will be right at home under the conditions of the Pacific Handicap is Max Brydon. A horse with a ton of ability, Max Bry don raced in Australia before coming home. He resumed at the Auckland Christmas meeting and was second over 3200 metres on the final night and then sixth in the Cambridge mile after racing deep for most of the contest. From two on the front tonight he will be very hard to beat. Tonight’s second leg will be run on the Hosking Stakes, a free-for-all for two-year-olds, to be started from a stand. The favourite for the race seems certain to be the Timely Knight colt, Kotare Knight. In two starts he has run two seconds, the first to Kotare Victor, a stablemate, in the Golden Slipper and then, at New Year, he split Whispering Campaign, unbeaten in two starts, and Avalon, the Springtime Stakes winner at Addington. That form looks winning form in any language. Hanover Scottish, successful on the track last year and second last time on Rotorua’s second day, could run well if he can hit out safely from his No. 2 draw, while the locally-owned Titan Bay, impressive when winning at Wanganui on Monday, also comes right into the picture.
