Holiday toll at 1976 level
PA Wellington Four people have died on New Zealand roads since the holiday period began at 4 p.m. on Christmas Eve. The figure — up to late last evening — is the same as at the corresponding time last year. For the period from 4 p.m. on Christmas Eve to 8 a.m. on January 4 last year the total number of road deaths was 19. The total for the year now stands at 683 — nearly
90 more than this time last year. The Ministry of Transport says that drivers’ behaviour has improved in the last 24 hours and that driving conditions are generally good. In the Wellington district however 40 drivers had been apprehended for driving after drinking, and had had their keys taken from them. Christchurch yesterday was keeping up its good behaviour of the week-end. To last evening there had been only three minor accidents, and no breath tests.
