145 in Brabin cricket
PA Wellington A cultured 145 by David Oakley was the highlight of the first day of the Brabin Shield under 20 national cricket tournament at Lower Hutt yesterday. Oakley, who was recently made captain of the New Zealand secondary schoolboy’s team, blasted 21 fours as Wellington went to 256 against Northern Districts. Wickets tumbled about him during his innings but he shared in two 100 partnerships, with Paul Rowe and David McEwan. With Northern 154 for six at stumps, Wellington was in a sound position.

Otago’s John ’ Bracewell scattered the ’ Auckland batsmen with his r medium-pacers, taking 6 for 51. , Auckland managed 164, ' while Otago fared little bet--5 ter with 121 for seven at the ; close. A fine 57 for the last i wicket between Gerald 3 Cummings (40) and Scott - McNally (30 not out) saved 1 Canterbury' from disaster against Central Districts, t Canterbury was 95 for nine s unil the pair joined to take the score to 152.
Later Cummings took 4 for 23 with his medium- pacers, as Central reeled to 115 all out just before stumps. Central’s main support came from Scott Briasco, who scored 56 in 145 minutes. Scores:— Wellington 236 (D. Oakley 145, D. McEwan 49; R. Gray 4/47, B. Fowler 3/49) met Northern Districts 154/6 (K. White 49 not out; P. Stoyanoff 3/51). Auckland 164 (J. Valentine 45; J. Bracewell 6/51) met Otago 121/7 (C. Jackson 49; T. Hellaby 3/34). Canterbury 152 (R. Fuller 42, G. Cummings 40, S. McNally 30 not out; G. Robertson 6/32, B. Thomas 3/17) met Central Districts 115 (S. Briasco 56; G. Cummings 4/23).
