A North Canterbury XI had a firm grip on its game against the Christchurch Suburban B team after the first day of the two day match at Garrick Park. North Canterbury compiled a useful 258 and B. Hawkins was the chief contributor with 63. At stumps Suburban was still 150 runs
behind with only two first innings wickets standing. Scores — North Canterbury XI 258 (B. Hawkins 63, P. Jenkins 43, I. Eder 42, R. van Zanteen 23: R. Proven 3/52, G. Baxter 3/43, D. McNaughton 2/67) met Suburban B 108/8 (N. Ebert 55; R. Macefield 3/18. C. Hight 3/21).
