THE VETS
RAPHAEL J. MACLOUGHLIIN
EPISODE 6
Leaving the estate agent’s office. Wayne returned to his motel to freshen up. Dressed casually, he made sure to arrive in time for his dinner engagement with the Seddons, only to be taken aback at the appearance of Arthur Seddon in the doorway. He could not help thinking to himself: “It’s like dining with Beau Brummell. I must remember to dress for dinner next time—that is if there is a next time.” The meal was eaten in strained silence, broken only by Amelia’s inquiry. “How did you fare with your flat-hunting, Mr Mason?” In an effort to be
friendly, Wayne said: “Call me Wayne, everyone does.” ‘Td rather not—you do understand," Amelia replied coldly. Ignoring the rebuff, Wayne continued. ‘‘Strangely enough, 1 rather fancied a small ownership flat, but the land agent insists on me viewing the old colonial homestead just down the road from here." Arthur Seddon dropped his fork; Amelia looked aghast. Nothing was said, but Arthur suddenly found his appetite diminished as a result of Wayne’s statement.
