Waiau rail link in balance
Rumours about the possible closing of the Waiau branch line — from Waipara through Waikari, Hawarden, and Culverden to Waiau — are worrying the Hurunui County Council. After discussing the rumour at its December meeting, the council decided to write to the Railways Department, and the member of Parliament for Rangiora (Mr D. F. Quigley) asking for clarification about the future of the line. Cr S. J. S. Barker said he had heard that the stationmaster at Waikari would be transferred to. another station in March and he did not know whether another stationmaster would be appointed at Waikari. The county chairman (Mr C. N. Mackenzie) said that the Railways Department had decided to close the branch line several years ago, but had postponed the decision until windthrown timber had been cleared from the Balmoral and Hanmer Forests. >
The Waiau line is the last remaining branch line in Canterbury and one of the few left in the South Island.
