The South African point of view
Sir, — 1 object most strongly to the amount of space you frequently give to the South African ConsulGeneral to reply in your paper to criticism of his Government. Surely, at this stage of the proceedings, with the horror of apartheid so obvious to all, with the farce of the recent elections when less than 18 per cent of the population were eligible to vote so recently in the news, surely with the grave of Steve Biko still freshly covered, with all effective white and black opposition crushed in the latest series of arrests and bannings, there is no “other side of the story” to present in order to obtain an objective view? Yet you repeatedly allow Mr Lindhorst large amounts of space to state the case for his Government. The world says
that they have no case; why does “The Press” say that they have? — Yours, etc., (Rev. Fr) JIM CONSEDINE. December 10, 1977.
[“The Press” has never supported “the case” for apartheid, but it will continue to support the case for freedom of speech and the right of reply, both of which are so readily denied in South Africa.—Editor]
