East Timor
Sir, — Two articles in Thursday’s edition of "The Press” caught my attention. They seemed to be related because they both referred to human rights. The first concerned a William Baxter who was instrumental in finally bringing to justice a Klan member for his part in the fatal bombing of a church 14 years previously. Behind Mr Baxter’s desk hung a quote from Dante: “The hottest places in Hell are reserved for those who in times of great moral crisis maintain their neutrality.” This maxim could apply to the second article about East Timor. To the cries for help from this country we turn the deaf, neutral ear, as we did when West New Guinea was annexed. — Yours, etc., DANNY McLEAN. Nelson, December 12, 1977.
