Paparua to look again at grant for Arts Centre
The Paparua County Council has agreed to reconsider its decision not to support the Arts Centre in setting up a charitable trust to administer the former town site of the University of Canterbury. The council decided this after receiving a letter from the Arts Centre chairman (Mr P. D. Dunbar) asking it to postpone its final decision to allow the centre to clarify its case.
The general manager (Mr B. Riley) would be pleased to meet anyone on the council, Mr Dunbar said. Councillor P. K. Keller moved that the matter be referred back to the finance committee for further consideration.
In reply to Cr A. Y. Shuker, who said that there should be a good reason for the referral, Cr Keller said that groups at the centre had done a tremendous amount of work restoring the inside of buildings. It would be beyond their physical capabilities to raise funds for the outside as well as the inside of the buildings,he said. Councillor J. C. Wilson said that there should be another avenue of fund-raising for groups such as the Arts Centre. I
This could be in the form of a lottery, which could be drawn after all tickets had been sold.
People began ventures with a lot of enthusiasm then the burden invariably fell on the ratepayer, Cr' Wilson said. Chil suit The council will begin civil proceedings to recover $14,000, allegedly owed by Binmasta Disposals, Ltd. Councillors unanimously agreed to follow the advice of their legal adviser (Mr T. M. Abbott). He also advised the withdrawal of a petition to wind up the firm. The council was toid that Binmasta Disposals, Ltd, formerly owed the council $25,000 for its use of the county’s tip. The firm had paid $ll,OOO of that amount.
