‘Family doctor' best for heart tests
The primary responsibility for blood pressure screening should rest with the family doctor, according to a report by a working party of the National Heart Foundation. While commending the operation of mass bloodpressure screening programmes, such as those organised by some service clubs, the report said these should be considered as temporary measures — useful for stimulating interest but not effective as a long-term solution. The most effective place for b 1 o o d-pressure screening was in the gen-
eral practice, by either the doctor or the nurse, so that immediate follow-up measures might be taken if necessary. It was important, too, to ensure better co-ordination between screening of hospital patients within the hospital, and between hospitals and family doctors. Too often, present facilities such as those available in hospitals, were under-used, and the aim must always be to ensure that every adult in New Zealand should have blood pressure recorded at specified intervals, said the report.
