Around the greens

Four of the six qualifying rounds have been played in the fours at Linwood and three skips have reached the qualifying mark by remaining unbeaten. They are Bryan Smith, Bernie Samson and Kevin Watson.

Skips who require just one more win are Ivan Smith, Garbo Papp, Morgan Moffat, Bruce Drewery and Sonny Calder. In the singles two rounds have been completed in each draw and the unbeaten group comprises Alan Black, Ivan Smith, Drewery, Colin Calder, Moffat, Jim Kelly, Hugh Molloy, Brian Smith and Sonny Calder.

Gary Muirson, a secondyear player, has caused two upsets in the singles by taking lives off Joe Lyell and Wally Wright. A surprise in the pairs was the defeat of Hugh Molly and Curley Lyons by Rod Kimber and Drewery. Dave Gowans, who last summer became the first member of the Edgeware club

in its 67 years to win all six championship titles, has suffered a setback to his hopes ,of a repeat win in the singles this season. In a close and interesting game he lost his first life, 17-21, to George White.

H. P. Butts beat T. J. Edmonds on one side of the draw in the third round of the singles at St Albans, but Edmonds got his revenge when the pair met again on the other side. Others through to the fourth round are G. Smith, E. W. Scott and M. V. Taylor, who stili holds two lives.

Skips to have reached the fourth round of the pairs are H. W. Van Dalsum, W. J. Cogswell and N. J. Marsden. In the fours, Cogswell came from well behind to beat G. E. Harper on an extra end and be the first skip to advance into the fourth round. Home teams were successful on both greens in the

November open triples tournament at St Albans. The winners on one green were F. J. French, T. R. Woolcott and W. J. Cogswell (s) and, on the other, O. Aitken, J. T. Williamson and J. A. Goile (s). The skips placed second were H. Couper (Riccarton Racecourse) and A. Hughes (St Albans). * * *

The president, Bruce Sinclair, and the senior vicepresident, Arch Murray, of the Christchurch centre were in opposition when they met in the final of the Amberley club’s 40th anniversary tournament.

And seniority prevailed. Sinclair beat Murray, whose team was skipped by Roy Bailey, 4-3, in the five-end final. Sinclair’s team was Andy Hughes, Eric Scott and Jack Edmonds and the other members of Murray’s entry were Bob Rolton and Bill Dickinson.

The tournament attracted 26 teams, including one from Motueka, and it Was played on the Amberley and Waikari greens. There were 10 qualifiers, the skips being Sinclair (St Albans),. Trevor Molloy (Scargill), Ron Anderson (Cheviot). Alan Stuart (Burnside), Travis Coup (Kaiapoi), Jack Haves

(Amberley) — a life member of the club and the winner of the first championship in 1937 — Keith McFarlane (Motueka), Len Spence (Elmwood), Murray (Canterbury) and George Humphries (Fendalton). In the semi-finals, Sinclair beat Stuart, 7-2 and Murray beat Spence, 6-1.

The semi-finals were played at the week-end in the triples championship at Canterbury and they produced two rather different games. In one, Roy Scott’s team .of Bud Whitford and Jim Weir was too strong for Kevin Matthew’s entry of Lex Sewood and Alan Hayes —

Scott winning, 23-7. The second semi-final ended on an exciting note when Chester Ashworth scored a five on the last end to beat Fred Forrester, 23-22. Ashworth was partnered by Bill Davis and S.onny Whittington and Forrester had Lindsay Stowell and Fred Stoddart playing for him. In a very good singles match at Canterbury, Jim Mason beat Dan O’Neill, 2119 on the twenty-eighth end and there was some excellent bowling in an intermediate singles game between Bruce Mason and Dave Keane, Mason winning. 21-16.
