Scour may put waste into river
The North Canterbury Wool and Fellmongery Company, Ltd, will probably get water right to discharge treated effluent into the; Kaiapoi River. In a decision by a special tribunal set up by the North Canterbury Catchment Board and Regional Water Board, the chairman Mr P. J. McA- i loon) and two members have recommended rights to discharge up to 1050 cu. m at not more than 38 litres a second five days a week between 6 a.m. and 5 p.m., the right to expire on October 31, 1979. However, the effluent must not contain more than 50mg a litre of grease, oils or fats; there must be no discharge of any untreated or partly treated effluent ; from any emergency o v e r fl o w outfall: the sulphide level must not exceed lOmg a litre 100 m from the outfall; and random samples must be permitted for analysis at the direction] of the Regional Water' Board. Objections by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society, the Kaiapoi Borough Council, and New Zealand Salmon Anglers’ Association were disallowed because no objector opposed a right requiring compliance with the ] classification standard of the ’Kaiapoi River.
