P.M.’s Department grows

I PA Wellington The number of persons I employed in the Prime Minister’s Department will I rise from 50 to 56. the ' Acting Prime Minister, (Mr Taiboys) told Parliament. He said the staff increase was a result of the : addition of six persons to the department’s External Intelligence Bureau, which now has 26 employees.

The staffing and expense of the department were the subject of a heated exchange in Parliament earlier this year when the Opposition" asserted that the staff ceiling was far higher than under the previous Labour Government. Mr Talboys’s comments were prompted by a question by Mr M. F. Courtney (Lab., Nelson).
