Australian markets lose $600M
There was a surprising last minute recovery for some of the leading stocks which fell sharply in early trading on Australian sharemarkets yesterday, but overall the market remained weak. An estimated sAust6ooM, has wiped off share values this week as the Government batties to get on top of the Labour Opposition in the public opinion polls, just I two weeks ahead of the: General Election. B.H.P. fell 10 cents to a low for the year of 5.08 c in early trading, but recovered | to close at 5.16 c. I Other leaders to reach or trade at low prices for the I year were the . National Bank, T.N.T., Utah. Western Mining, M.1.M., Hamersley and C.R.A. The National Bank dropped 25c to 2.38 c in early trading before recovering to 2.45 c. News of the share issues by it and the C.B.A. Bank took the market by surprise, and saw sharp idrops for all Banks.
