2,4,5-T

Sir, — Your correspondents (October 28) did not mention one inadequacy in the “Health” article on 2,4,5-T (“The Press,” October 26). The author makes several generalisations which could only be justified from a considerable volume of data: the assertion that the clusters of foetal abnormalities in the North Island were chance, for example. Could a spokesperson for the Health Department reassure us that in fact comprehensive data are being collected, and that there is no statistically significant correlation between abnormal pregnancies and exposure to hormone sprays — Yours, etc.. D. W. COLLINS. October 31. 1977. [This letter was referred to the Department of Health. Mr C. M. Collins, director of the division of public health, replies as follows: “Data on congenital abnormalities are being collected and periodically analysed to ensure that no correlation between the use of any agricultural chemical (and not just hormone sprays) and abnormal pregnancies exists. In the event that a hazard is detected, the Department of Health would take immediate action.”!
