Four pups survived from tne litter of five born to the Scott Base sledge dog, Betty,' and all now tip the scales at aoout five pounds.
Betty is proving a good: mother and very proud of) iher litter. She watches eseryl move when the base dog-) handler, Mr Steve Chambers, of Waiouru, weighs the) pups, one at a time, in a! large biscuit tin. But the) pups are growing so fast) that he will need a bigger] tin for the next weighing. Two of the pups will be| named after dogs in Scott’s; 1911 expedition — Nugis!
hand Vida. The other two will: f be named Helge and Jens,: 'after members of the team) •[used by Amundsen on his! tdash to be first at the South) !)POI. li The pups will swell the 11 base’s dog team to 25 when I they are moved t. the dog- ■| lines in about six month’s I time.
