Maiden visit by container ship
The first of the Australian National Line’s container ships will make her maiden visit to Lyttelton on Thursday. She is the 25,000 tonne Australian Endeavour—the first container ship to be bought by A.N.L. Crewed and operated by Australians, the Australian Endeavour has been a regular caller at Auckland and Wellington for some time and has made at least one call to Port Chalmers. As an Australian ship she is quite within her rights to dabble in the trans Tasman trade—so she will take the opportunity of discharging the first Tasman cargo to pass through Lyttelton’s terminal. She will discharge a quantity of Australian citrus] fruit but her agents do not! see her as a serious threat to the Union Steam Ship Company’s grip on the Tasman trade.
