Russian cruise liners
Sir. — Many years ago, the Union Steam Chip Company was the largest shipping line in the southern hemisphere. Younger folk mav not realise that there were passenger vessels and at times cruises. We have let it slip through our fingers and have become a nation of grizzlers. We are slipping fast. Here then, is an interesting titbit. The Russians are into us in a big way. not onlv in fishing. From Auckland next year, five liners of the Soviet Un’en will be cruising here. They* are — Fedor Shalyapin. Leonid Sobinov, Shota Rustavelli, Mikhail Lermontov and Felix Dzeriinsky. After travelling aboard the Fedor
Shalyapin last year I must admit they make cruising a delight. But the Russian “comrades ’ aboard smile very little. I suppose it is their long hours of work and small wages, compared to the glorious conditions aboard New Zealand ships, which makes them sour. — Yours, etc., JOHN LESLIE. November 14. 1977.
