Satellite broadcast of Christmas programme
South Pacific Television will join television organisations from six other countries to produce an hour-long Christmas programme, centred on the Church of the Nativity in Jerusalem. New Zealand will contribute six minutes of Maori music. Other countries’ contributions include music from a Jamaican steel band, negro spirituals from the United States, instrumental music from France, and boys’ choirs from Germany and the United Kingdom. The satellite broadcast is being organised by John Vernon, a senior producer with the 8.8. C. He was in Auckland last week to complete details with TV2. He said an English playwright, Christopher Fry, would write the script, and he hoped that an English actress, Judi Dench, or Dorothy Tutin, would provide the narration. Another possibility was the Scottish actor, Tom Fleming, Mr Vernon said.
Eleven European countries and Brazil have so far shown strong interest in the production. It will be screened at 10 p.m. on Christmas Eve in Britain, and 10 a.m. on Christmas Day in New Zealand.
