Zoologist shows favourite photos
Patrick Ryan; photographic exhibition; C.S.A. Gallery until November 15. Reviewer: Nancy Cawley.
The collection of 40 colour photographs on show in the first-floor back gallery of the C.S.A. has competence, but not a great deal of character. In most of the prints the technical execution is good, but in a disappointingly large number the results could have been achieved by a careful Sunday photographer with an expensive camera.
They are better than record shots, but over-all there is an absence of mood in the composition. The exceptions stand out. Among them are No.
29 “Stump,” taken on Kaitorete Spit, Taumutu; No. 20 “Tidal Crack,” a pleasing close-up of a jumble of seaweed straps, just above sea-level at Kaikoura; and No. 30 “Kelp," where a shimmer of multi-coloured marine plants fill the frame. Many of the studies are natural history subjects, and here the somewhat mundane presentation is relieved by a meticulous attention — almost a reverence — for zoological and botanical detail. In No. 39 “Sundew,” the hairy filaments on the two plant tongues are exquisitely reproduced. For some, colour in a photographic exhibition can be a distraction, but here it is sensitively re-
produced, with a few shrill exceptions. Patrick Ryan, who is 27, was born in Nottingham and came to New Zealand as a young child. Later
r travel included a year with Volunteer Service Aboard in Borneo. Mr ’ Ryan is studying for a doctorate in zoology at 1 the University of Canterbury.
