Player crippled for life
NZPA Sydney The cnppled footballer, Greg Killeen, may be in hospital for the rest of his life, his father said. Mr L. Killeen said his son’s injuries were so excessive that they might never be able to bring him home. "He is lucky to be alive — alter his accident surgeons told us his injuries were almost invariably fatal.” Greg Killeen, aged 15, of Coogee, an eastern suburb of Sydney, has been paralysed from the neck down since a i football accident in New Zea- i land in August while touring | with his team, Clovelly! Juniors. He returned to Sydney on| Wednesday strapped oh a I stretcher. An ambulance was waiting on the tarmac to take I him to the spina! unit at the Pnnce Henry Hospital at i Little Bay.
“He has the worst degree of spinal injury, and surgeons tell us there is' little hope for improvement,” said Mr Killeen.
His son’s neck was broken when a scrum collapsed during a match with the Manakau Football Club. Last year he had won the Clovelly club s award for the best forward.
The Manakau Football ■ Club raised money to pay for i the Killeens’ expenses in j New Zealand, and now the ! Clovelly' club has started al fund-raising campaign.
