Teacher recruits here soon
NZPA London The first of 100 British teachers recruited to fill vacancies in New Zealand are expected to leave Britain by Christmas, according to the New Zealand High Commission’s chief migration officer, (Mr I. Jarvis). “The selection team from the Department of Education has finished its interviews and now it is up to us to complete their applications,” he said.
“We hope that people will begin leaving Britain next month and that everyone will have left before the new school year starts in February,” Mr Jarvis said. There was a “standard mix” of married and single teachers and, although the exact number going to New Zeaand was not known, Mr Jarvis thought it would Involve about 300 persons, including wives and children.
Originally there were plans for recruiting 225 teachers but some of the vacancies had been filled in New Zealand. Mr Jarvis said that of the 100 finally recruited, 75 would receive assisted passages. The recruitment scheme recieved some publicity in the national press in Britain after some New Zealand teachers in a letter said that it was low pay scales which had forced the department to seek teachers overseas.
