THE DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL WELFARE is seeking an economist or social research worker for its Research Section in Wellington to assist in the expanding field of economic and social research into aspects of social welfare. The section undertakes a wide variety of research, ranging from investigations of household economics and the design of optimal social security programmes to studies of social problems such as the provision of services for neglected or deprived children, the treatment of young offenders, etc. As well, the section is involved in the evaluation of a wide range of programmes operated by the Department. Applicants should preferably have a degree in economics, though graduates in other social sciences will be considered. It is important that applicants should have some understanding of research methodology and scientific method as it applies in economic and social research. While it is desirable, experience in economic or social research is not essential. This is a rewarding position in an important and growing field. Commencing salary is determined by qualifications and experience. There are excellent opportunities for advancement.
