University Vacancies THE PAPUA NEW GUINEA UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY APPLICATIONS ARE INVITED for the following academic positions: DEPARTMENT OF ARCHITECTURE AND BUILDING LECTURER/SENIOR LECTURER Applications are invited from persons with appropriate academic qualifications, professional and teaching experience, for one or more positions within the Department of Architecture and Building. Previous experience in a tropical developing country would be an advantage. The successful applicant will be required to participate in design teaching in studio and practical situations, and should be able to lecture in construction and other subjects such as urban and regional planning, building science or professional practice. Participation in research and community development projects can also be expected. DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING I SENIOR TECHNICAL INSTRUCTOR IN CIVIL ENGINEERING Applicants should possess as a minimum qualification a Technical Certificate in Civil or Mechanical Engineering, together with at least five years’ post apprenticeship industrial experience. In addition, it is expected that the successful applicant will have a thorough knowledge of engineering drawing and civil engineering construction methods and equipment, and some teaching experience in these areas would be an advantage. The appointee will be expected to conduct classes in Engineering Drawing, construction methods and equipment and workshops practice. Appointment wall be made at salary level appropriate to the appointee’s qualifications and experience. DEPARTMENT OF ELECTRICAL AND COMMUNICATION ENGINEERING SENIOR LECTURER/LECTURER—POWER SYSTEMS ENGINEERING QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants should have a good first degree in Electrical Engineering, teaching experience at tertiary level and some industrial experience. Substantial subsequent experience in the electricity supply industry or the heavy electrical equipment manufacturing industry is also required. A higher degree would be an advantage. SENIOR LECTURER-RADIO AND ELECTRONICS (1 Post from June, 1978) QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants should have a good first degree in Electrical Engineering and substantial subsequent experience in Electronics which will preferably include both academic and industrial work. A higher degree would be an advantage. DUTIES: The successful applicant will be required to teach students to degree level, to develop and teach courses for graduate students to conduct and supervise research in topics relevant to Papua New Guinea and to assist in the administration ci the Department. LABORATORY DEMONSTRATOR (1 POST AT SENIOR TECHNICAL 4 INSTRUCTOR/TECHNICAL INSTRUCTOR ' LEVEL FROM JANUARY 1978) DUTIES: The successful applicant will be responsible for the operation of laboratory clases in basic machines and electronics subjects." The duties will include supervising the development and maintenance of experiments and equipment in those areas in conjunction with members of teaching staff. He will also be responsible for the preparation and operation of classroom demonstration. QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants should have a degree or equivalent experience with small machines, electronics and instrumentation. Teaching experience at Certificate level would be an advantage. DEPARTMENT OF SURVEYING SENIOR LECTURER/LECTURER/ PRINCIPLE INSTRUCTOR/ SENIOR INSTRUCTOR SURVEYING QUALIFICATIONS FOR APPOINTMENT AS: SENIOR LECTURER: Essential—(l) A good first degree in surveying from a recognised University or institution plus Master’s Degree in some area of surveying. (II) about 10 years practical/ teaching experience in various aspects of surveying (preferable Engineering surveying) in positions of responsibility. Desirable—Research experience or experience in research guidance and/or postgraduate qualification at Ph.D. level. A minimum of two years experience. LECTURER: Essential—A good first degree or diploma in Surveying from a recognised institution, plus about 10 years practical experience in varied surveying jobs including 5 years in responsible position, plus about 5 years experience in teaching and/or academic course administration. Desirable—Some experience or training with the army survey corps and/or of survey work in Papua New Guinea. SENIOR INSTRUCTOR: Essential—A good first degree or diploma in surveying from a recognised institution plus about 5 years practical experience in varied surveying jobs including surveying teaching. Desirable—Some experience or training with the Army Survey Corps. LECTURER/SENIOR INSTRUCTOR/ 1 TECHNICAL INSTRUCTOR (CARTOGRAPHY) Appointment can be made at any one of the above levels according to the qualifications of the selected candidates from among applicants or others considered suitable. QUALIFICATIONS: (1) For appointment at Lecturer/Senior Instructor level—a first degree in or with major in Cartography or equivalent professional qualification plus practical experience in one or more cartographic offices working mainly in the map-drafting area. Teaching experience in Cartography desirable. (II) For appointment at Instructor level—a diploma or equivalent qualification in Cartography plus practical experience in Cartographic work particularly in the map-drafting area. Teaching experience in Cartography desirable. SALARY RANGES: (Expressed in Kina —KI ” approx. sAustl.l4, SUSI.2B, new pence 72 as at October 31.) SENIOR TUTOR/TECHNICAL INSTRUCTION K8943-K9918. LECTURER/SENIOR TECHNICAL INSTRUCTOR K10,159-K13,893. SENIOR LECTURER/CHIEF PRINCIPAL TECHNICAL INSTRUCTOR K14.129-K15.841. Allowances additional to salary are payable: Married K 2300 per annum. Single Kl3OO per annumin certain circumstances a child allowance of K 136 per annum is also payable. An educational allowance and additional fares may be provided for children being educated away from their parents place of residence. Other benefits include furnished housing (hard goods only) supplied at nominal rental, leave fares to place of recruitment every second year and equivalent fares to Canberra, Australian each alternate year and six weeks annual leave. Superannuation benefits apply in most circumstances: study leave of six months will accrue after five semesters of service. Appointment will be on contract basis for a maximum of three years in the first instance. The University reserves the right to make no appointment or to make an appointment by invitation at any stage.
