Australian markets firm
Share prices firmed considerably during trading on the Australian stock exchanges yesterday as the market anticipated the late announcement of a 0.5 per cent, drop in the Australian savings bond interest rate to 9.25 per cent. Rumours gathered pace all day and the market leader, BHP closed with a 8c rise to 562 c. j The Bank of N.S.W. per* | formed well to close at 548 c, la 12c rise on the day while |ANZ gained 7c to 340 c. Woodside was the big voij time trader yesterday: ■ comIbined fully paid and contribjuting shares totalled more (than 1.2 M shares. The fully paid shares gained 2c to 89c, while the contribs rose 3c to 35c. Woodside has performed well on optimism over the huge North West Shelf gas project in which it is a partner. CSR fell 6c to 295 c; other sugar stocks eased in the
wake of falls in the London sugar price. On the take-over front there was less action yesterday.
