Fight for beaches
The Waimairi County Council will make a concerted effort to prosecute motor-cyclists who ride on the beaches and adjacent sand dunes in the county, if a r< commendation of the works, reserves, and traffic committee is adopted.
Cr A. A. Adcock said the problem, and the attempts at a solution, had been continuing for years.
But prosecution was often difficult because the motor-cyclists were difficult to catch, and sometimes there were so many they were “like mosquitoes —when one was squashed, another took its place.” Cr B. E. Cossar said he thought stronger action was needed, particularly in light of what Cr Adcock had said. He was particularly concerned about the erosion that would be
caused if the dunes were damaged. The County Engineer (Mr A. J. W. Lamb) said he had been approached by Cr Adcock, who is manager of Spencer Park, and a new sign would be erected, but signs did not seem to last long. The committee recommended that a concerted effort should be made to catch and prosecute the offenders.
