Boys bowl tightly
Fortunes fluctuated in the Canterbury Boys’ Cricket Association premier grade match between St Bede’s and Linwood High School at Ferry Road on Saturday.
Linwood had early success on the first day of the second round match when it pressed St Bede’s into an apparently hopeless position at 89 for seven. The bowling of M. Lane, G. Boyle and G. Pierce was very tight and backed up by excellent fielding.
However, after lunch J. McGuire and S. Mackie formed a fighting partnership of 101 runs for the eight wicket and swung the game away from Linwood, to give St Bede’s a useful first innings total. St Bede’s kept control of the match when it captured two quick wickets but spoilt the situation with some disappointing lapses in the field. Six catches went to ground and five of these have enabled R. Latham to reach 79 not out. At stumps Linwood was regaining control of the match.
Burnside High School batted first in its match with Xavier College but only two batsmen managed to make runs. For the second consecutive week, V. Barry bowled for a long spell —l7 overs—and kept the Bumside batsmen on the defensive as he captured seven wickets, the best performance for the day. Xavier College could not manage to gain a first Innings lead as D. King beat them easily with his off-spinners. Only R. McKendry enjoyed some success. Burnside lost two more wickets before stumps and an outright result is In sight. St Andrew’s College was se.it in to bat on its home ground and lost a wicket on the second ball of the match. M. Harris and D. Templeton exercised their experience to the full by forming a third-wicket stand of 97 runs and at tea, Harris declared the St Andrew’s Innings closed. Shirley Boys’ High School still has a big task ahead to grasp the first Innings lead requiring 130 runs with seven wickets still In hand.
A. Albertson wag the best oi the Shirlev batsmen. The condition of the wicket at Cashmere High School controlled the progress of the match from the start when the home team began to bat after winning the toss. No batsman could plav proper shots as the ball had such variation in bounce and cut. Cashmere was out after two hours and a half. St Thomas's also had difficulty and runs cams very slowly. Only G. Hills man aged to piece together a reasonable Innings The declaration was made once the first innings lead was obtained as the slow scoring indicated little wisdom In trying to establish a big total. Before stumps Cashmere lost Its “night watchman,” but the match Is evenly-placed. Results were:— St Bede’s College 209 (J. Me Gulre 63, S. Mackie 55 no.: G. Pierce 4/64) met Linwood High School 142/5 (R. Latham 79 n. 0.1. Bumside High School 102 (B, Nicholson 28, D. King 27; V. Barry 7/34) and 43/2 met Xaviet College 86 (R. McKendrv 31; D. King 4/0, A. Brown 3/23). St Andrew’s College 209/9 dec. (M. Harris 56, D. Templeton 58, F. Bates 40; S. Booth 3/38. K. Moorfield 3/46> met Shirley Boys’ High School 83/3 (A Albertson 38 n. 0.).
