Top stayers in Benson & Hedges Gold Cup field

In a year of record entries the Canterbury Jockey Club had to resort to the ballot box in five races, including the Benson and Hedges Gold Cup, when acceptances for the first day of the New Zealand Cup meeting at Riccarton on Saturday closed yesterday. The $15,000 Benson, and Hedges Gold Cup attracted 24 acceptors, among them some of the top stayers available in the country at the present time. But only 18 are assured of a start and among the six reserves are Clarendon Gold and Thomas Mellay, the winner and run-ner-up in last Saturday's New Zealand Cup Trial at Motukarara.

Last year’s New Zealand Cup winner, Andrew, will lead the Gold Cup field out. Closest to this Hastingstrained stayer in the weights are Cattle King and Guest ;Star, last year’s Wellington Cup winner.

Royal Dell, winner of the North Canterbury Cup at Rangiora on Labour Day, is the top-rated South Island stayer. He will carry 54.5 kg., half a kilogram less than Cattle King and Guest Star and two less than Andrew. Glen, Reklaw and last year’s Benson and Hedges Gold Cup winner, Heidsieck, are notable acceptors among the eight northerners in the field.

The Benson and Hedges Gold Cup will be the first leg of the T.A.B. concession double. The second leg of this double, The Pegasus, is dominated by southern sprinters but the speedy Levin filly, Sly Wink, snould give them all plenty to do. One of the major attractions, the $20,000 New Zealand Two Thousand Guineas, has attracted 11 acceptors. From the north are the high-class three-year-olds. Uncle Remus, Crest Star and the filly, Braless. Catastrophe, which has taken high ranking among the southern three-year-olds this season, should be the south’s brightest hope. Other first-day features will be the Welcome Stakes, for two-year-olds, and the Jockey Club Handicap, a $4OOO event for class one and two metric-milers.
