A day to remember
The veteran Riccarton owner, Mr Norman McDonald, win find today memorable for two good reasons. To begin with it is his birthday and on this day 22 years ago Toparoa carried his colours to victory in the Melbourne Cup. Toparoa, which gave the top Sydney trainer, Tommy Smith, his lone training success in a Melbourne Cup, died two years ago at the age of 27.
