Big pageant of progress at Ashburton

Not in a hundred years have Ashburton show patrons seen such a pageant of fanning progress, or such a big and diverse representation of the livestock breeds which make up the district’s rich pastoral industry, as at the Ashburton Agricultural; and Pastoral Association’s' centennial show. The show, extended to three days. Thursday to Saturday, because of the centenary, was a record one in all respects. A year of hard work and planning by the association was rewarded with fine weather for all three days. Gate takings were Ss726—nearly $7OO higher than last year—with 5524 C of this taken on the Saturday. Attendance over the three davs exceeded; 11,000. Entries totalled 4429, ex-i ceeding the previous record I last year by 726. Show patrons were undoubtedly just as pleased as the association’s centenaryvear president (Mr A. J. Blair) with the success of the' event. It was climaxed on Saturday when, for the second time in a year—the othc. being the Ashburton County centennial procession and vintage field day last November—a wonderful array of restored vehicles and farm machinery was displayed together with many other relics of farming and transport from the last 100 years. Judges generally praised the high quality of the livestock on exhibition, and of the preparation of the horses and ponies. Competition was keener than ever, with the extra incentive of a number of silver trays and other imposing trophies, at stake only for the centennial show, for supreme champion awards in various sections. The show was officially opened on Saturdav morning bv the Minister of Lands (Mr V. S. Young). He commended the association on its progressiveness in catering in its programme not only for every aspect of farming but for a multiplicity of other events for town and countrv people. Mr Young said agricultural and pastoral associations must move with the times in th'' regard, or be left behind. With more and more

peonle moving into urban areas, be said, the need would become greater to displav New Zealand’s agricultural and pastoral wealth through these shows, so that the maior sources of this countrv’s livelihood were emphasised. The Minister congratulated■ the association on its centenary and wished it the best I as it embarked on its second 100 years. One of New Zealand’s! foremost dog trialists and a household name in Canterbury Mr R. M. Wilson, of Kirwee. had a momentous centennial show in the district in which he was born and raised. Against 93 of the best doas in the South Island Mr Wilson’s three entries, a bitch. Rose, and two of her daughters. Rosebud and Queen, gained the top three placing;-. Mr Wilson won his first dog trial in Ashburton in 1926 and scored his 1000th win in 1968. He savs he has lost count of the first placings since then. In 51 years Mr Wilson has won seven national championships and has been run-ner-up seven times. Rose, which won the Ashburton Show centennial championship trial, has gained Mr Wilson three national titles. Rose and Queen were used in the New Zealand-pro-duced television series, “The Mackenzie Affair." on the life of James Mackenzie. Instead of Mr Wilson's appearing three times in the ring to work his three finalists before the public on Saturday’.- programme, a demonstration trial was held with Mr Wilson’s Rose, and the fourth place-getter. D. J. Haines, and fifth place-get-ter. C. D. Wilson, a brother of Mr R. M. Wilson. Mr C. D. Wilson's Tim won the demonstration with 98 points, from Mr R. M. Wilson. 97. The horse section, one of the biggest of any South Island show with 1911 entries, produced some excellent perFriday results, p. 29

iuruuun.es, .„.a-out. An Australian judge of group C ponies (up to 127 cm), Mr I. McDuie, of Sydney, said the top ponies in each open class were excellent, and comparable with the best standards anywhere. Below these, however, there were instances of ponies being not well enough schooled for their young riders, the smallest of whom did not always have full control of their mounts. The standard of showing and presentation of the entries /as excellent. Mr McDuie said. The champion hack was A. L. Dunn and Mrs Dunn’s Nightcall, a highly successful combination at many shows. A silver tray given by the Christchurch Press Company for the supreme champion oony at the centennial show was won by Anne-Marie Connelly’s mount, Kimberley. The grand parade of livestock and horses was led by Mr Bruce Small, with a yearling heifer. At the first show 100 years before his great-great-grandfather, Mr Walter Small, a pioneer settier of the Wheatstone district, led the grand parade, also with a yearling heifer. Bruce Small’s uncle, Mr R. F. Small, was the association’s president last year. Patrons’ interest was held after the grand parade with the parade of machinery and implements, from the earliest to the most modern. A polo match between the North Island and an Ashburton team was won by the North Island combination by five goals to two. Championship awards were:— Sheep Merino.—Ram: J. R. Todhunter and Sons.
