'10,000' out at Big Dig
Treasure hunters crowded shoulder to shoulder along a stretch of New Brighton beach on Saturday for the Dig,” organised to raise money for the new pedestrian mall in the shopping centre.
Mr B. N. De Vere, president of the New Brighton Businessmen’s Association described the scene at the beach on Saturday as “incredible.” “W*_ estimated there might have been up to 10,000 people there.” Trading in the shops had been “as good as during the Christmas season.” It was hoped the dig might become an annual event, he said. The dig was organised by the Businessmen’s Association and the Lions’ Club. Mr De Vere said it was not yet known how much money had been raised, but all the main prizes—including a trip for two to Surfers Paradise, a colour television set, and a stereo unit—had been redeemed.
