Vehicles for country police
Wellington reporter Forty-four couritry police stations wiil be issued with either a new police car or a new four-wheel-drive vehicle bv Christmas, beginning a programme under which every country police station ir New Zealand will have a marked, fully equipped police vehicle by 1980. Included among the stations which will get new cars are Takaka, Kaikoura, Reefton. Akaroa. Darfield, Lake Tekapo, and Fairlie. Haast. Otira, Hanmer, and Methven will get four-wheel-drive vehicles. Increasing crime and improved transport meant that the relative isolation of country police service was no longer any guarantee of a quiet life, said the Commissioner of Police (Mr K. B. Burnside). The rural constable had to have the means of responding to calls from the public with the same speed and efficiency as other policemen. The new vehicles, with twoway radios, would provide that capability.
