SMITHFIELD MARKET
The New Zealand lamb trade in the United Kingdom was very quiet last week, reports the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board in its weekly market survey. Temperatures were unseasonally mild, and this affected the meat trade generally. Throughput of New Zealand lamb continued to be considerably below August and September levels. It appears that lower retail beef prices have made it more difficult for the trade to move New Zealand meat, in spite of the maintenance of a sizeable price margin compared with home-killed lamb. Quotations for New Zealand lamb were: Price Var’n P, P „ per lb per lb PL .. .. 47.0-48.0 n.c. PM .. .. 44.0-45.0 n.c. With no indication of any settlement of the waterfront dispute at United States East Coast ports, the price for imported cow-beef firmed Ic per lb to 60c. Demand is good for spot supplies of imported beef, with choice cuts in short supply. MUTTON The mutton market in Japan remained quiet last week, and no New Zealand sales were reported.
