Sporting monies under fire
NZPA Sydney Sporting sponsorship by tobacco and liquor firms in Australia worth more than sAust4M could be jeopardised by the recommendations of a Federal Government committee.
The committee said the Federal Government should not give grants to sporting or cultural organisations that accept money from those sources.
The report also recommended that sportsmen should not promote alcohol or tobacco products. The 18-month study showed Australia to have 250,000 alcoholics and heavy drug abusers, with a third of the adult population addicted to cigarettes. If the committee’s recommendations were adopted, tennis would lose at least sAust7so,ooo in sponsorships. Rugby league, horse racing, cricket and trotting would be all similarly hit, while soccer would be down at least sAustsoo, ooo. Some church leaders have strongly supported the committee’s recommendations except for one—that marijuana be decriminalised.
