Party politics in council

Sir, — According to the final figures the new Christchurch City Council is made

up of one Mayor (Citizens), 10 Labour councillors, and nine Citizens’ Association councillors. Are we now to see a Labour Deputy Mayor? Mr Hay, who, often deplores party politics in local gove nment, now has his chance to show that he is truly abo v e these by allowing the elected councillors only to vote for the Deputy Mayor. The wishes of the voters in Christchurch will be best served by Citizens and Labour councillors working together in equal representation, and in harmony, for the good of our city. — Yours, etc., M. TASKER. October 30, 1977.
