Drinking driver caused death in collision
A young man drove through a red light at the intersection of St Asaph Street and Durham Street and collided with a car causing the death of a passenger in that car, Mr K. W. Frampton, S.M., was told in
; the Christchurch Magis-1 itrate's Court yesterday. Noel Harper, aged 23, an auto warehouseman, pleaded guilty to a charge of causing the death of Jessie Mary Teen by carelessly using a motor-car on July 2. He was .convicted' and remanded to (November 3 for sentence. I Sergeant M. Paton said i that on July 2, the defendant (drove his car along St I Asaph Street and failed to ; stop at a red light on the ; corner of Durham Street. Mrs Teen was a passenger ■ ! in that car which then hit a 1 third car. Mrs Teen later died in hospital, and the others in- ■' volved in the accident' suffered minor injuries, said I Sergeant Paton. The defendant gave a( blood specimen at Christi church Hospital and the i
blood-alcohol content was 192 mg. 1 When interviewed by the! police, defendent said he could not recall the speed he was travelling down St Asaph Street, or the accident. He said he had had two glasses of beer earlier in the day, but a witness said that when he spoke to Harper after the accident, defendent smelt strongly of alcohol, said Sergeant Paton.
