Drivers’ pay average $110 gross
Coach drivers on strike today in support of a 9J per cent wage claim earn” on average, $llO a week gross, according to a recent survey in the industry. This figure is for lowerpaid drivers in the commuter service, but includes overtime, and shift allowances.
The actual award rate for a driver of less than one year’s service is $84.09 a week gross, plus 6 per cent wage order, plus a 7 per cent cost-of-living adjustment, bringing it to about $96 a week gross. After tax, the figure is about $7B a week, depending on whether the driver is single or married. Tour drivers earn considerably more to compensate them for being away from their home for days on end. The award provides for a $4 allowance for each night a driver is awav from his usual place of residence, for "out of pocket expenses.” An extra $1.50 a day is paid to drivers on advertised allinclusive tours of not less than two days duration, in recognition of additional skills and responsibilities required.
