Cannabis in riverbed
About 100 cannabis plants have been seized and destroyed by the Ashburton police after being found in the Rakaia riverbed.
Detective Sergeant J. Millar, of the Ashburton police, said that the plants were in varying stages of growth, and were found and reported to the police by a member of the public.
This is the third seizing of cannabis in the area so far this spring, and by far the largest.
Detective Sergeant Millar said that Mid-Canterbury seemed to follow a general trend for this time of the year—cannabis seemed to be becoming widespread, as indicated by the number of plants which had been found.
The assistance of the public in such matters was appreciated by the police, he said.
