Old Boys to face much tougher team
A High School Old Boys team in good spirits after its crushing win over EastShirley last week-end will take on the much more formidable Bumside-West University team at Bumside Park tomorrow in the main match of the senior cricket competition. However, one drawback to its chances is the unavailability of Richard and Dayle Hadlee for the second day. One replacemen has been found, Ricky Page, but the other is still uncertain. The Old Boys batting lineup promises many runs this season with three of the first six being either current or former Canterbury representatives.
Bumside-West also registered a win last week-end but made somewhat heavy weather of scoring the 82 runs required. Replacements will have to be found for Kevin Collins and Stephen Bateman, both of whom are involved in the Town team to play Minor Associations next week-end.
The Sydenham team to play Riccarton at Hagley Oval contains two changes from the side which gained an exciting victory over St Albans last week. Greg Brown, committed to university examinations, and Warren Bell, who is in Australia on business, have been replaced by Paul Creedy, a left arm medium pace bowler, and Derek Burrell, who missed the St Albans match through injury. In the Riccarton team.
Geoff Miller, who scored century and an 80 in th second grade last week-en< replaces the veteran Graham Barrett. John Lovell-Smith returns to the Old Collegians senior team to meet East-Shirley at Elmwood Park in place of Hamish Wright and David Selby replaces Keith Williams, who was unavailable. However, with Pau! McEwan and Rod Fulton unavailable on the second day, Williams may be drafted in to fill one position. The left-arm spinner, John Langley, who performed with outstanding success on the first day of competition this season, returns to the EastShirley team, as does Reeve Banks. They take the places of Kevin Pitcher and Keith Hartshorne.
St Albans has only one change in its team to play Lancaster Park at Burwood Oval. Joe Harrison has been replaced by Les Smith, who scored a total of 180 runs in the second grade last weekend without being dismissed. Harrison’s spinning finger has swollen and his absence will put all the burden of slow bowling on Stephen Boock. Lancaster Park will have the services of David Dempsey and Tony Collins for the first day only and Maurice Ryan is unavailable for this match, his place being taken by Graham Kench. The opening bowler. Grant Craighead, is also unavailable and Kit Chambers will take his place.
