Richard Dunn to quit boxing
NZPA London Richard Dunn, the former British, European and Commonwealth heavy-weight boxing champion, has announced his retirement from boxing, Agence France-Press reported.
Although the 33-year-old Yorkshireman’s decision was not unexpected, its timing was surprising, since he was due to fight Billy Aird, of Liverpool, next month for the vacant British title.
Dunn, a former paratrooper, won the British and Commonwealth titles in 1975
when he beat Bunny Johnson on points, then won the European crown by knocking out Bemt August, of West Germany, in three rounds. In May, 1976, he fought Muhammad Ali for the world title and was stopped in five rounds. He was badly outclassed but put up a brave, aggressive challenge.
That defeat marked the turning point in Dunn’s career, however. Six months later he lost his three titles to Joe Bugner, who knocked him out in one round in their return fight.
