Probation at home
A young New Zealander who attempted to steal from a bank while on holiday on the Queensland Gold Coast will serve an 18-month probation term in his home city of Auckland. Raymond John Anthony Purcell, aged 17, pleaded guilty in the Southport Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday to a charge of breaking and entering the premises of the Commercial Banking Company at Surfers Paradise with intent to commit a crime. The police told the court that Purcell was apprehended after the manager of the bank raised the alarm about 10.30 the previous evening. A police spokesman said Purcell would serve his probation period in Auckland under a reciprocal arrangement between Australia and New Zealand.
