Mr Gordon ‘all talk, no action’
PA New Plymouth “When were we going to see some backbone from the Minister of Labour,” a New Plymouth building contractor asked the Minister of Housing (Mr Holland) in New Plymouth on Monday. Speaking at the Joinery Manufacturers’ Federation conference, Mr R. L. Jones asked: “When is the Government going to do something about all these stirrers in the country?”
He said Mr Gordon was all talk, and no action. “It’s the job of the Minister of Labour to straighten things out,” he said, referring to the recent
Timber Workers’ Union strike. “All he did was build up the status of Sir Tom Skinner and the F.0.L.”
When asked by Mr Holland what he would do about union strife, Mr Jones replied: “I’d get the Government to call a State of Emergency.
Mr Holland said a move of this nature would be unwise, and would most probably provoke a national stoppage. He said the reason behind the Government’s ballots on compulsory unionism was to get union members more involved in union affairs, making them more democratic.
