Speculation enlivens Australian markets
Australian share-markets • retreated as the Latrobe Vai- , ley power workers walked off the job yesterday. B. which traded as high as 560 c during the day . finished unchanged at 544 c. A.A.R. slipped 2c to C.S.R.’s buying price of 230 c on turnover of 3M shares in Sydney and Melbourne as the possibility of a higher bid from C.R.A. faded. Coal and Allied moved sharply ahead from 288 c to 315 c after indications that the N.S.W. Government might make new proposals on the Warkworth deposit. Market observers noted that C.R.A. could be favoured in such a change, but its price slipped 6c to 240 c. C. slipped a cent to 304 c, but o,ther sugar stocks moved ahead. Gold stocks were in demand on the rising bullion price. M.1.M., Bougainville, and Peko rose. Pancontinental showed a 60c rise to 780 c. The banks were popular on interest-rate considerations.
