Gore-bound Candidate looks sharp in training
By
J. J. BOYLE
Candidate and Young Kelly, members of the Riccarton team of Joe and Peter Williams, will be campaigned on widely-separated courses this week-end. Young Kelly is engaged at Trentham, and Candidate will be at Gore, with his first race as a hurdler earmarked for the first day of that meeting. Candidate has shown fair ability in schooling and should not be shaded for speed by the southern hurdlers. He galloped 1400 m strongly with Try Two in Imin 31.8 s on the plough at Riccarton yesterday, quickening for the last 600 in 37.85. The Washdyke horseman, Paul Dooney, will ride Candidate at Gore. Rosie’s Boy, another acceptor for Gore, led Sergeant Wilson by a length and a half after running 600 m on the plough in 37.65. Allie Robinson has been engaged to ride Rosie’s Boy in the Spring Handicap at Gore.
Yesterday’s work was divided between the small trial grass and the plough. Trialists had good footing. Lady Lucifer ran 1400 m on the plough in Imin 34.25, but was not really in business until she was more than half way on the trip. She hurried in from the 800 m in 50.2 s and from the 600 in 3625. Lady Lucifer will not be one of the more seasoned runners in the feature middle-distance race at Rangiora, but might have done enough to make a showing. She will be ridden by the stable apprentice, A. Robertson. S a 1 v a r o led her stablemate, Nyah, by three lengths finishing 1200 m on the grass in Imin 20s, the last 600 in 39.95. Town and Country was under restraint and took Imin 25.6 s for his 1200 m. First Tuesday ran 1400 m on the grass in Imin 345, the last 800 in 52.3, the final 600 in 38.2. He looks bright and muscular for his North Canterbury Cup engagement. Phoenix Lad ran 1400 m in
Imin 325, the final 600 in 40. Cappello did striding work on the plough for a round, then ran in from the 600 in 40. He did not have luck in running in the Geraldine club’s McDonald Memorial, and will have a chance to make amends in the North Canterbury Cup. Yakcam showed keenness for his task to shade Golden Trumpet over 800 m on the grass in 50. Chiltern Blaze followed in 52, the last 600 in 38.25.
Firpo was clear of his stablemate, Gotta Go, finishing 600 in 39.85. Firpo showed plenty of dash, but Gotta Go loafed in his work.
Ernest and Fairy Cross returned 50.4 for 800 m. Precious Mac and Halo, runners for Joe Shaw’s stable in the Morwenstow Handicap at Rangiora, sprinted 600 in 40.25.
Prince Causeur and Leopard ran 1400 m on the plough in Imin 345, the last 600 in 39.35. Lover’s Gift followed in Imin 34.85, and the last 600 in 40.85.
